Shopify and WooCommerce run a huge share of the online stores built by Indian D2C brands. Both can take UPI, cards and cash on delivery, ship across India and send WhatsApp order updates. The right choice depends less on features and more on how much control you want, who will maintain the store, and how you prefer to pay for it.
The quick verdict
- Choose Shopify if you want to launch fast, avoid managing servers and updates, and are happy paying a monthly plan.
- Choose WooCommerce if you want full ownership and control, custom pricing or B2B features, and have someone to maintain it.
Side-by-side comparison
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Hosted e-commerce platform | Free plugin for a WordPress website |
| Launch speed | Fastest — themes and apps ready to go | Fast with a good theme; more setup |
| Monthly cost | Plan fee plus paid apps | Hosting plus any paid plugins |
| Payments in India | Third-party gateways such as Razorpay; UPI, cards, wallets, COD | Gateways such as Razorpay; UPI, cards, wallets, COD |
| Control | Limited to what Shopify allows | Full control over code, data and hosting |
| Maintenance | Shopify handles hosting, security and updates | You or your developer handle updates and security |

Costs to compare honestly
Comparing only the plan fee is misleading. Add up everything for the first year:
- Platform: Shopify's monthly plan, or hosting for WooCommerce (better hosting matters for speed).
- Apps and plugins: reviews, subscriptions, upsells and shipping tools are often paid monthly on Shopify; WooCommerce plugins are often a yearly licence.
- Payment fees: gateways charge a percentage per transaction, and Shopify may add its own transaction fee when you use a third-party gateway, depending on your plan. Check both on the current pricing pages.
- Theme and build: a premium theme plus customisation, product upload and testing.
- Maintenance: your time or a care plan, especially for WooCommerce.
Choose Shopify if…
- You want to start selling within two to three weeks.
- Nobody on your team wants to deal with hosting, updates or security.
- Your catalogue and pricing are fairly standard (B2C, fixed prices).
Choose WooCommerce if…
- You need dealer or wholesale pricing, quotations or unusual checkout rules.
- You want your data and code fully in your own hands.
- You already have a WordPress site or a developer who will maintain it.
Things that matter more than the platform
- Fast product pages on mobile — most Indian shoppers buy on their phone.
- Clear COD rules and shipping charges before checkout.
- WhatsApp order confirmations and delivery updates to reduce failed deliveries.
- Good product photos and honest size or specification guides.
Five questions to answer before you choose
- Who will look after the store every week? If the answer is "nobody technical", Shopify removes a lot of risk.
- How many products and variants will you have in a year? Both handle thousands, but bulk editing and imports feel different — try each with a sample of your real catalogue.
- Do you sell to businesses as well as consumers? Dealer price lists, minimum order quantities and GST invoices with your customer's GSTIN usually push towards WooCommerce or a custom build.
- Which apps or plugins are must-haves? List them, then add their monthly or yearly cost to the platform fee before comparing.
- Where will your orders go after checkout? If they need to reach Tally, Zoho, a warehouse or a courier aggregator, check the integration exists for the platform you pick.
Write your answers down and share them with whoever builds the store. A good developer will recommend a platform based on them — and will be honest when the answer is "Shopify is enough", even if a custom build would earn them more.
Switching later is possible — products, customers and orders can be migrated — but plan URLs and redirects carefully so you keep your Google rankings.

Ask us on WhatsAppFrequently asked questions
Does Shopify support UPI and COD in India?
Yes. Through Indian payment gateways such as Razorpay you can accept UPI, cards and wallets, and cash on delivery can be enabled as a payment method.
Is WooCommerce free?
The plugin is free, but you pay for hosting, a theme, any premium plugins and maintenance.
Which is better for SEO?
Both can rank well. WooCommerce offers more control over URLs and technical SEO; Shopify is easier to keep fast without technical work.
Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify or the other way?
Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated; set up redirects so existing links and rankings carry over.
